Learning about Sierra Leone

Social Studies...We decided the best
way to learn about Sierra Leone was to make
a 3D map! This will be a trimester project
that the kids absolutely love!
Can you name the 5 things we eat that comes
from the ocean? The kids could!

There was a lot of team work making the map look amazing!

Working together to make sure the coloring was perfect!

They took a moment to pose for the camera!

The gold glittered beach a long with the creatures in the sea was all done by our creative students.

An up close picture of the yellow oysters with silver colored glitter as the pearl,
a green shrimp, red crabs, orange lobsters and purple fish. You can't forget our fisherman! :)

They even added seashells around the coast line! :) What a creative bunch!

Bubbles are AIR!

Another day in Science class....
another day doing experiments!!
Today we discovered what bubbles actually are
and we practiced keeping a paper towel dry in a vial while
it was under water!

Reading Buddies

Let's Read Together...

We have such a great school here at AISF! We all work together so
everyone succeeds. This week started our weekly "Read with a Big Buddy"
program where the 6th graders come down and we can show off how well
we can read. This time also allows us to get extra help on words that are tough.
Everyone, including the teachers, loved the helpful attitudes of every student.
The 1st graders already said this was their favorite part of every Wednesday!

Learning about Air

What is all around us?

The kids loved using the balloon pump to blow up the balloons!

Working in groups makes everyone happy!

Even the most timid was smiling while making the balloon make sounds

Concentration is the name of the game :)

Youssef showing off what he accomplished

Zara K demonstration of how air can move a feather

Tons of fun things to try out!

This was a loud and fun day!

Blowing balls across the table to a friend was a great way to learn!

Chasing the lost materials around the room happened a lot!

Coco had to continuously find where her feather blew!

Zara A. so proud of her balloon, she didn't want to give up the balloon pump! :)

AIR!!!

Welcome One and All

Welcome to the 2012-2013 AISF 1st Graders

Welcome to The American International School Freetown in Freetown, Sierra Leone. I am Mrs. Shalaby and I am an American who has taught the last few years in Cairo, Egypt. Please keep checking this page for updates to the chaos, fun and experiments that we do in this wild and wacky class!

Getting to know our whole classroom has been a blast! So far we have 3 Americans (including myself), 2 Sierra Leoneons (including the TA Ms. Elizabeth), 1 Senegalese, 1 British, 1 Pakistani, 1 Egyptian, and 1 Zimbabwean. I love our diversity!
